At just 24 years old, young Oakville entrepreneur Marc Anthony Atton has opened his very own single origin coffee shop in his hometown.
Single Bean Coffee aims to mimic the vibes of a single malt whiskey room, but with single origin coffee instead. Though they deal exclusively in single origin coffee, they serve beans from all around the world, including places like Ethiopia, Nicaragua, Tanzania, Peru, Jamaica and Hawaii.
Atton hand picks the green beans himself and oversees the roasting process, and at Single Bean Coffee they even have custom calibrated grinders they use for each specific variety. Not only that, beans are ground to order, roasting happens bi-weekly and beans are stored in containers with one-way valves that expel excess carbon dioxide and prevent oxygen from entering.
He prefers selecting beans from regions with higher elevation, as cooler temperatures, reduced oxygen levels and increased atmospheric pressure bring out the acidity, sweetness and more nuanced flavour profiles of the coffee.
Upon opening, Single Bean is offering coffee in six varieties: Hawaiian Kona, Jamaican Blue Mountain, Tanzanian Peaberry, Ethiopian Organic Yirgacheffe, Peru fair trade organic decaf and Nicaragua Jinotega fair trade organic. You can try them in a simple format like a classic espresso, or go for a latte or flat white. They also have baked goods on offer like chocolate or matcha cruffins.
Single Bean Coffee is now open in Oakville at 363 Kerr Street.
