A unique storefront marked by a dramatic black curtain facade now has a new occupant–and this one serves coffee.

Recently, Isle of Coffee–a specialty coffee and baked goods store inspired by the quirky Wes Anderson film Isle of Dogs–opened its second location on Queen Street East in Toronto’s Riverside neighbourhood.

Its first shop can be found at 380 A Eglinton Ave. W.

The airy and modern cafe has taken over the space once occupied by the Civilian House of Cannabis, which was launched by the renowned Toronto and Miami-based lifestyle and entertainment brand Ink Entertainment in early 2021.

While the dispensary might be no more, the interior isn’t dramatically different, boasting off-white walls, a long counter (which is now home to some distinctly modern espresso tech), a modern, tunnel-esque layout and plenty of seating. The cafe also features a quaint back patio best enjoyed while the weather is still balmy.

On the cafe’s website, the husband and wife team behind the growing brand say Isle of Dogs didn’t just inspire their name but their entire vibe.

“The characters in the film uphold a strong sense of integrity which we try to live by in our own lives. The film encapsulates how we want to share our values about love and the value of community,” the website reads.

“In combination with sincerity and a desire to live a healthy and leisurely life we want to support those around us. It is our vision to use our space as a medium for artistic exchange.”

As far as coffee goes, the menu is vast. Diners can order flat whites, Americanos, lattes (flavoured and non-flavoured), cappuccinos, mistos, cordatos, cold brews and iced drinks. Some specialty drinks include the tahini maple latte, the popping brewccino (which looks like a gorgeous, caramel-hued beer), an iced hojicha latte and more.

The cafe also serves tea and baked goods, including scones, madeleines, and basque cheesecake. As far as savoury food goes, customers can order avocado toast with thinly sliced zucchini and feta.

The cafe officially opened its doors this week.
