Toronto is getting a totally new salsa street dancing event, and it’s coming up soon.

Salsa on Market Street is a new street dancing event series that’s taking over Toronto’s historic St. Lawrence neighbourhood in Old Town. For three Sundays in summer, the streets will be transformed into Latin dance floors for non-stop salsa.

The event series will take place on certain Sundays in June, July and August, and each Sunday will have its own specific theme highlighting Latin music and culture.

June 30 will be themed around bachata, a type of Latin music with origins in the Dominican Republic. Professional dance company Araguacu who specialize in teaching and performing bachata and mambo are scheduled from 4 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Bachata Swing, a band that plays bachata and merengue, are scheduled from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m.

July 28 will celebrate Latin fusion with its Ecuadorian and Cuban roots. Dance group Shumdesalsa is scheduled from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., and world music fusion band The Imbayakunas is scheduled from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The final event closing out the series on Aug. 18 is themed around (what else) salsa. Colombian dance academy Salsa & Sabor will be highlighted from 4 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. and the Latin Swing Orchestra will perform from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Salsa in Toronto is actually the largest Latino-themed cultural fiesta in Canada, and also has events in Blue Mountain and Mont-Tremblant. Their famous Salsa on St. Clair event will take place July 6 and 7 this year.
