Toronto is getting a farmers’ market that will operate on a pay-what-you-can basis.

Everyone deserves fair access to fresh food, but rising grocery prices are making it all the more difficult for an increasing number of people.

Enter the Our Fair Share Farmers’ Market put on by Dixon Hall.

“Our Fair Share is a sustainable Pay-What-You-Choose (PWYC) community farmers market that is affordable and equitable. Rising food costs are affecting us all, and we are on a mission to make sure everyone can access the food they deserve,” reads the Dixon Hall website.

“Dixon Hall is collaborating with FoodShare’s Good Food Markets and other food security organizations to bring seasonal, local produce when available to the communities we serve, as well as imported staples. Come get a surprise assortment of pre-selected produce, and you choose your price!”

Technically there is a suggested minimum price of $5, but the market rate is $20, which you’re of course more than welcome to pay if you can afford it. You can also pay any other amount.

“Everyone has a right to healthy food, and we want to empower everyone to choose how much you pay,” reads the site.

“You are also welcome to donate to someone else’s basket. All proceeds from the market will be directed back to the cost of food. A PWYC pricing model is the basis for a more equitable and just food system where we can all get our fair share.”

Aside from offering fresh produce, there will also be live music, family activities, hot food, refreshments, and even resources for learning about healthy eating at the farmers’ market.

Our Fair Share Farmers’ Market takes place biweekly on Thursdays, outdoors at 190 Carlton Street, and indoors at 188 Carlton during bad weather, on August 15 and 29 and Sept. 12 and 26, from 3 p.m. until they sell out.
