Churrasqueiras serving Portuguese chicken are popular in Toronto, and the city just got its first location of a chain that’s been around for about a decade but is brand new to the province.

Monteiro serves chicken combos, sandwiches and bowls, as well as wings and poutine. And of course, they have natas and Sumol on their menu to top it all off. The best part is, everything is totally halal.

The first location of Monteiro opened about 10 years ago in Jean-Talon Market. The connection between the founders and Portuguese food stretches back to trips to Portugal and time spent working at a Portuguese restaurant in Montreal.

In addition to the Jean-Talon location, Monteiro now has Cote-des-Neiges, Guy Concordia, Montreal North, Vimont, Cote-Vertu and Masson locations. Though they have seven stores in Quebec, they’ve never opened in Ontario until now.

When the chain opened their first Ontario restaurant in Scarborough in July, they celebrated with $5 chicken plates. The Scarborough spot is a Monteiro Express location with a special $10 menu with their chicken thigh combo, chicken sandwich, Piri bowl, wings and poutine all available for $10 across the board.

Monteiro is now open at 1950 Lawrence Ave. E.
