Is it too early to start thinking about Christmas? Not for Netflix, which is set to begin filming its latest holiday movie with a star-studded cast and it’s all happening right here in Toronto!
A Merry Little Ex-Mas is the latest addition to the Netflix holiday-verse that viewers may want to add to their annual watch list.
The rom-com, directed by Steve Carr (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) and written by Holly Hester (Grace Under Fire), revolves around a recently separated couple aiming to celebrate one last Christmas together with their children before some big life changes. The plot thickens when the husband introduces his new girlfriend into the holiday festivities, leading to unexpected complications.
On Dec. (2024), Netflix revealed five actors joining the cast. Alicia Silverstone (Clueless), who is also an executive producer, teams up with Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the Teenage Witch), both steering the production along with Hartbreak Films. They are joined by Jameela Jamil (The Good Place), Oliver Hudson (Rules of Engagement), and Pierson Fode (Man from Toronto), bringing incredible talent and diverse star power to the screen.
While it’s uncertain who else may join the lineup, the movie is already shaping up to deliver an entertaining story.
According to Toronto.ca, filming begins on Jan. 31— just days away— at Wild Pitch Productions Inc., located at 40 Carl Hall Rd. It’s unclear whether additional filming will take place in other Ontario cities or at notable landmarks and if the production will remain primarily studio-based.
Shooting ends in spring (March 12), and despite the buzz, the city has not reported any expected disruptions to roadways, allowing daily life to continue smoothly around the filming areas.
As of now, Netflix has not announced a release date for “A Merry Little Ex-Mas.” However, a December premiere would be perfectly fitting, giving viewers the chance to cozy up with some hot chocolate and enjoy the magic of the holiday season with a heartwarming movie!
