Believe it or not, one of Toronto’s best-known historic sites is getting its first winter market this year.
Today, the city announced that the inaugural Winter Market will kick off at the St. Lawrence Market on Thursday, Dec. 5 and run until Monday, Dec. 23.
The market, which will run from Thursday to Sunday throughout the month, will boast numerous vendors selling artisanal products and seasonal food and drinks. The multi-week event will also feature live entertainment, including an ice skater on synthetic ice, the “Biggest Little Drummer Boy” on stilts, the Alpine Merry Sheep Choir, Opera Atelier: Live Opera Performances, the Soul Pop Holiday Trio, and the Holiday Trio.
“Enjoy a vibrant mix of live opera, jazz, festive carolers and many more seasonal acts. With something for everyone, it’s the perfect way to add extra cheer to the holiday season,” the city said in a news release.
There is no cost for admission, and guests can take free photos with Santa at select times on Saturdays. Families taking a snapshot with St. Nick are encouraged to bring a new toy, non-perishable food items or cash to support people in need.
The market will set up shop on the pedestrianized Market Street from Front Street to The Esplanade, and the area will remain closed to cars through December.
Beyond the Winter Market, visitors can also step into the St. Lawrence Market, an internationally acclaimed destination with 120 merchants that has been operating since 1803.
The farmers market, open on Saturdays, will continue to operate out of its temporary location on The Esplanade until the North Market opens next year.
