A Japanese-style cafe chain with origins in Brazil has just opened their first ever Canadian location in Toronto.

The Coffee has a simple name that matches its minimalist aesthetic inspired by the cafes of Japan, and operates in 22 countries around the world including Brazil, Japan, Portugal, Germany, Australia, Armenia, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Italy, Puerto Rico, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.

“In 2017, after several trips to Japan, the brothers Alexandre, Carlos and Luis Fertonani decided to create a café that would bring the To Go culture to Brazil,” reads the website for The Coffee. “Compact, minimalist and technological, The Coffee arrived to revolutionize the coffee shop model in the country.”

The site also sums up The Coffee as “The best of Brazilian coffee combined with the purity and perfectionism of Japan.”

In addition to Brazil, The Coffee also sources beans from Guatemala and Peru, and they roast their own coffee.

Signature drinks include creative options like a honey latte and even a pink latte, and they also do gelato frappes, fresh sodas, seasonal beverages and expertly brewed drip coffee made using V60 and Chemex methods.

The Coffee also serves a full food menu with baked goods, sandwiches, bowls and even all-day brunch that includes options like omelettes, pancakes, toasts and chia pudding.

The menu for The Coffee’s first Toronto location is a little stripped down, but still includes their “purist” and “signature” coffee beverages as well as baked goods and sandwiches.

Their two sandwiches on the menu right now are a grilled cheese sandwich with or without ham. While they don’t have a ton of food options available currently, they are serving ice cream with brownies or in affogatos. You can also buy bags of beans at the new Toronto location of The Coffee.

The Coffee just opened their first Canadian location in Toronto, but they’re already poised to open another on Front which is currently in the works.

For now, their first ever Canadian location has opened at 901 King St. W.
