A platinum-selling Canadian recording artist will be the guest speaker at an upcoming Oakville event celebrating International Women’s Day.
Jully Black will deliver the keynote address at The Dinner Party, hosted by the Women of Halton Action Movement (WHAM), on Wednesday, Mar. 6.
This year’s event celebrates not only the 20th anniversary of The Dinner Party event, but also the 40th anniversary of WHAM, making it one of the longest running feminist lobby groups in the province.
Black is a Canadian icon with powerhouse vocals, an infectious personality and a great love of people. Called Canada’s Queen of R&B, she was named by CBC Music as one of the 25 Greatest Canadian Singers ever.
After taking the music scene by storm, Black has also acted on stage and TV and sang the Canadian National Anthem at the 2023 NBA All-Star game.
The Dinner Party is a major fundraiser to raise awareness and support for two charities: Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services Halton (SAVIS) and Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan.
All profits raised through ticket sales, silent auction and 50/50 draw are solely dedicated to supporting these two groups. Since inception, The Dinner Party has raised more than $600,000.
Over the years, guest speakers have included Lisa LaFlamme, Michele Landsberg, Dr. Lauryn Oates, Dr. Samantha Nutt, Sally Armstrong, Dr. Janet Morrison, Roberta Jamieson, Irshad Manji, Arlene Dickinson, Deborah Ellis, Sheila Copps, Nancy Riche, Paula Todd, Joy Warner, Shae Invidiata, Donna Kennedy, Mary Walsh, Candy Palmater and Tanya Tagaq.
WHAM is a local, grassroots, nonpartisan, feminist lobby organization that has advocated since 1981 to improve the status of women locally, nationally, and internationally. WHAM is a member of AWH, Advancement of Women Halton, a collaborative of almost 30 groups supporting gender equality at all levels of government.
