A farm run by Matty Matheson has now opened a shop in rural Ontario, meaning you can get access to the same ingredients used at the celeb chef’s restaurants.
Blue Goose Farm describes itself as a “small scale chef’s garden,” and is a collaborative effort between Toronto chefs Matty Matheson and Keenan McVey.
“My grandfather owned and operated Blue Goose Restaurant in PEI and I remember, whenever I would visit, my grandfather would always make sure to show us what he had growing in his personal garden in the back,” says Matty Matheson on the Blue Goose website. “This has always been a strong memory in my mind and I’m happy we are able to pay tribute in the namesake.”
Their website reads, “Our focus is to grow a wide variety of specialty produce for restaurants while focusing on more traditional and sustainable farming practices and techniques. As chefs, our growing style and selections are informed by what we want to eat. Rare heirlooms and unique varieties which offer deliciousness, complexity and quality are things that get us excited.”
They emphasize a hands-off approach that preserves the biology of their farm, using no machinery, meaning the produce you can get from this farm is some of the most unique and best quality you can find.
“We want to help create a link between the farm and the consumer, which promotes a simplistic and sustainable lifestyle based around food and community,” reads their site.
The farm has furthered that link by recently opening a shop on site. The shop sells fresh produce, flowers and products by other local producers. They should also be selling some special products like butters and takeout items.
The shop also serves locally roasted Habit coffee and has a small patio outside where you can chill.
They’re still on the lookout for local producers to stock at the shop, so anyone interested or aware of any purveyors can reach out.
The farm shop is now open at Blue Goose in Ridgeway/Crystal Beach at 6 Ridgeway Rd. next to Matty Matheson restaurant Rizzo’s House of Parm, with hours from Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
