A cafe that specialized in Indian filter coffee just abruptly announced they have closed the doors at their physical store. Another cafe is already taking over in its place.

Madras Kaapi makes South Indian coffee, or kaapi. It’s served with a visually impressive pouring process that produces a frothy drink.

Now, Madras Kaapi has announced they’re returning to their roots as an online shop.

They made a post to social media this week announcing their abrupt and immediate closure. The cafe opened as a physical shop in 2021, and now the owners have decided to take things in a new direction.

Madras Kaapi will still exist as an online store, and you’ll still be able to catch the owners at events.

The social media post garnered nearly 1,000 likes and over 150 comments from people saying they’ll miss the cafe space and the cultural representation it provided in the community, but that they’re excited for the next chapter.

The owners are not affiliated with the new cafe taking the place of Madras Kaapi in any way. There’s already signage up for the new spot, called Mayil Coffee.

Even though the Madras Kaapi owners won’t be affiliated with this new shop, Mayil will still be serving South Indian filter coffee.
