A beloved, neighbourhood bakery is closing after 18 years in Toronto.

Tatsu’s Bread at 3180 Lakeshore Blvd. W. in south Etobicoke announced they will close on Dec. 24.

The bakery opened in 2006 with a vision to “provide a top quality blend of Western and Japanese cultures for the local community at affordable prices.”

Master baker Tatsu Sato trained in Tokyo, Japan and Kensington Market in Toronto.

The shop offers a variety of freshly baked bread, sandwiches and treats. The baked goods were also a regular feature at the Lakeview Farmer’s Market just across the border in Mississauga.

But it is more than just a bakery, it is a community hub with local artists’ work on display and a showcase for musicians from Humber College’s music program.

The owners announced the closure on social media.

“Tatsu and Junko want to thank you as we make a formal announcement that our store will close on Christmas Eve, Tuesday, December 24th, 2024,” the post reads. “We started this bakery in 2006 and over these eighteen years, we have had so much wonderful support. We are truly grateful to have had our business and our life in this great community of South Etobicoke.”

For these past eighteen years, we have worked diligently to provide bread. We have learned so much, and we thank you once again for this incredible experience. With that said, we will now move on to our next chapter.”

They added that many customers enjoy their hot cross buns and they plan to bake “a lot” until the closure.

Many customers were sad to hear the news.

“The neighbourhood won’t be the same without you,” one person wrote.

“we will all miss you so much, the best bakery in all of Etobicoke, we love you dearly,” another said.

Others noted the special atmosphere of the bakery.

“I will be forever grateful for the abundance of kindness, generosity and warmth you’ve shared over the years,” one person wrote. “You created a truly special and inviting space that I have been lucky to feel welcomed into time and time again. I will cherish the conversations and laughter shared while enjoying your delicious baking.”
