Toronto has many spots for shawarma, but some have been around for much longer than others. While you can barely walk a few blocks in many neighbourhoods without running into a local shawarma restaurant, one that just closed will leave a void.
Ghazale has multiple locations across the city, but their spot in the Annex has been a reliable destination for affordable, filling eats for decades.
Now, they’ve announced the closure of that location with a lengthy post on social media.

“It is with deep emotion and a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Ghazale Restaurant, Annex location, after 30 years of operation. It is the end of the road for us,” reads the post.
“For three decades, the Ahmad family has poured our hearts, souls, and energy into this business. From the long days to the sleepless nights, we invested our efforts to serve you, our customers, and to make Ghazale Restaurant a place that brought people together. We served great food and great value to the best customers any business can ask for.”
The post goes on to elaborate further on the reasons for the closure and memories of operating Ghazale.
It says they’re returning the space back to the cinema in the same building for ongoing and future plans, and shares memories of staff being recognized on the street, the support of great landlords for many years, and the regulars they had that kept returning for affordable food during Ghazale’s long hours.
Locations of Ghazale on Walmer St., College St, and Lake Shore Blvd remain open.
The last day for Ghazale in the Annex was Jan. 31.
