A restaurant that’s been a fixture in a Toronto neighbourhood has announced their closure after over 35 years in business.
Amadeu’s in Kensington sometimes gets mistaken for “Amadeus,” but it was named for the original owner Amadeu, who ran the restaurant with his wife Celeste.
However, they did play on the similarity with signage that looked like a sheet of music. After his passing, it was taken over by Celeste’s son Rui and daughter Elizabeth.

The restaurant served traditional Portuguese cuisine like seafood pasta, codfish cakes, fried mackerel and fava bean stew.
Amadeu’s took to social media to share the monumental news of their closing.

“As we prepare to close the doors of Amadeus Restaurant after 36 years, we find ourselves filled with a mix of gratitude and nostalgia,” reads a message from Celeste, Elizabeth and Rui Gonçalves on social media.
“It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to an era that has been marked not only by exceptional culinary experiences but also by the relationships we have built along the way.”
The restaurant also posted another message to social media looking back on all their great years in the Kensington community, and asking for any memories, stories, photos or favourite dishes anyone might want to share.
