A restaurant celebrating Iranian cuisine, cocktails and culture has announced that they’ll be closing down after two decades of operation in Toronto.

Banu has been a fixture in the city’s restaurant scene for 20 years, and a proud representative of the Iranian community in Toronto. They’re known for their kebabs and other traditional dishes.

The restaurant took to social media to announce they’d be ending their reign.

“This is not goodbye BUT we have decided after 20 years to make the difficult decision to close our doors at our beloved Queen West location,” reads a social media post from Banu, which says the restaurant will not be renewing their lease.

“Restaurant work is not easy but this place was never just a restaurant for us, it was a passion and we will carry that forward no matter where we are. Banu is not done but she is taking a much much needed time out.”

The post has reached an outpouring of attention, with nearly 900 likes and almost 200 comments, many from other local businesses.

“The whole neighbourhood will feel this one and beyond,” reads a comment from the official West Queen West Instagram. “We’re sad to see you leave Queen West. You’ve helped define the block as an exciting and delicious place to visit! We’re so grateful for your work over the years and wish you a beautiful journey ahead.”

“Oh my goodness you will be so missed. I’ve had so many wonderful meals at Banu, made greater by the love and care from you all,” commented local flower shop Euclid Farms. French restaurant Jules commented, “Sorry to see a great neighbour leave. We wish you all the best for the next chapter.”

“This was so much more than a restaurant,” wrote a local Iranian designer. “It was a community, it was a safe place, it was an educational institution. I love you all so much thanks for all the great food and amazing times.”

The post seems to imply that Banu may return in one form or another. It also says that thankfully, catering will still be available from Banu.

The last day for Banu will be Feb. 28.
