Top Chef Canada is gearing up for another season, and they’ve just released their lineup of contestants.
As always, chefs from across the country are vying to become Top Chef, but there’s a solid representation of what Ontario has to offer this year.
From Toronto, Christina Khan is the chef de cuisine at one of Toronto’s top Italian restaurants, La Palma. Born in Toronto, she moved to Trinidad at a young age, and is now an expert at blending bold flavours and even developed her own signature hot sauce. She’s also cooked at trendy Latin restaurant Baro.
Alexander Fields is also representing Toronto, specifically the Etobicoke neighbourhood. He’s worked at Henry’s and Cafe Boulud in Toronto, but expresses his mastery of Caribbean, Southern and French flavours through his pop-up Rhyz. A Food Network article says his strategy for winning season 11 will be “shining a spotlight on the rich flavours, traditions, and culinary history of the African diaspora.”
Miriam Echeverria is representing Ontario’s Algonquin Highlands, and moved to Canada from Mexico 15 years ago. She’s been the chef de cuisine at Greta Solomon’s and L’Unita in Toronto. She now emphasizes using her skills for healing as the executive chef at wellness retreat Dimensions, which caters to veterans and first responders living with PTSD.
The other chefs competing are Lisa Ahier from Tofino, Shane Chartrand from Edmonton, Ruby Gatt and Rémi Lemieux from Montreal, Moira Murry from Halifax, Haan Palcu-Chang from Salt Spring Island and Chanthy Yen from Vancouver.
Winners of recent Top Chef Canada seasons Erica Karbelnik and Tre Sanderson are Toronto chefs, so you never know: a chef from Ontario just might sweep season 11.
Season 11 of Top Chef Canada premieres Monday, Oct. 14 at 10 p.m. on Food Network Canada.
