Old-school music fans can now browse HMV pop-up shops inside two Mississauga Toys “R” Us stores.

The once prolific music store is opening the pop-up locations inside Toys“R” Us stores across Canada.

The pop-ups are opening throughout the spring of 2024 and have already opened in Burlington. Now two shops are open in Toys “R” Us in Mississauga.

The 4559 Hurontaio St. Toys “R” Us has an HMV shop approximately 1,600 square feet in size, a Toys “R” Us spokesperson tells insauga.com.

And the pop-up inside 3150 Argentia Rd. is approximately 2,300 square feet.

The HMV shops are selling vinyl records, CDs, t-shirts, collectibles and nostalgic merchandise.

It’s unclear if HMV shops will be a permanent fixture inside Toys “R” Us — the spokesperson did not respond to a question regarding the length of time the pop-up shops would remain in the toy stores.

The first HMV (His Master’s Voice) opened on July 20 1921, on Oxford Street in London, England. It sold gramophones, household electrics, and of course, records.

But after changes to the industry with digital streaming music and movies widely available, HMV started to close shops in 2011. The last stores closed in Canada in 2017.

The HMV pop-ups are similar to Hudson Bay re-opening Zellers inside its department stores.
