Hot sauce business told to leave premises on extremely short notice in Toronto

A Toronto hot sauce business was told they have to leave the location where they’ve already been closed for a year with very little notice.

Tata Hot Sauce Emporium deals in hot sauce, but their storefront also served up Caribbean food like jerk chicken sandwiches. They recently posted to social media giving people an update on their situation at their physical location, which they’ve occupied for eight years but where they’ve been closed for a year due to flooding caused by a city water main pipe.

“We have been closed for one year to the date. Since June 2 2023, the little communication we had consisted of: being told that renovations are going to start soon, contractors are coordinating with insurance, city permits are delayed and so on,” reads the post.

“Recently through the rumour mill we heard the owners were selling the building. It was later confirmed but we received assurance that we didn’t need to worry, we should be good. On May 15th 2024, the sale was final and the next day construction was started by the new owners. On May 22nd we received notice that we had to leave the premises by June 1st for construction of the space—9 days notice.”

A post from another business who hosted Tata staff for a class delves into the situation a little bit: “Sadly, due to serious water damage incurred from city construction, their restaurant has been shut down for nearly a year, with no updates from the city on when repairs can be made, and their business can be reopened.”

The shop will not reopen at the same address at this point, but hopefully there’s a future at a physical store for Tata as they wrote in their post that they’re beginning “to look forward to where ever our new home will be,” saying they “would love to stay in the neighbourhood” but that it’s “not guaranteed.”
