La Poutine Week: Top 5 places for poutine in Hamilton

Published February 2, 2021 at 3:02 pm

It’s a dish that needs little introduction as it is as Canadian as lacrosse and beavertails.

Poutine is really the food that keeps on giving: it’s one’s go-to the day following an evening out (or even as an end to said evening); when you’re laid up with a cold, nothing tastes better than poutine; when you’re weary from shopping at the mall, it’s a tried and true rejuvenator.

Ultimately, poutine is just the perfect mix of awesomeness. What’s not to like? Fries? Good. Cheese? Good. Gravy? GOOOOD.

In honour of La Poutine Week in Canada, here are Hamilton’s top 5 places to get some:

5. Charred Rotisserie House

The Charred poutine is your standard with a twist – Piri Piri cheese curds. Great classic poutine with the right amount of kick. You can even get extra Piri Piri sauce on the side to spice it up to your liking.

4. Electric Diner

Electric Diner had the most classic, and simple poutine on this list. Their frites were topped with a good portion of cheese curds, gravy, and topped with chives. Simple, delicious, and I will be reordering them time and again.

3. Planted in Hamilton

Planted offers completely vegan poutine with seasoned fries, gravy, vegan curds, and the option to add BBQ jackfruit. A great classic poutine for all the vegans out there.

2. The Ship

I would never have thought a Crab Poutine would be good – and it was amazing! The Ship’s rendition of the classic poutine had crab meat, cheese curds, and bacon clam chowder. Unique, delicious and didn’t forget to include the key cheese curds.

1. The Dirty South

The Fried Chicken Poutine isn’t just the best poutine I tried, it might just be one of the best things I’ve ever had. Listen to this: fresh-cut fries, cheese curds, gravy, Louisiana fried chicken AND buttermilk ranch. I’ve been starring at their menu for 10 minutes now planning my next visit. They even have the option to build your own meal, with vegan and gluten-free options (for my dietary restricted friends). The fried chicken was full of flavour, juicy and made better with some cheese curds and buttermilk ranch.
