Ring in the year of the snake with Lunar New Year celebrations across Toronto.
The 2025 Chinese New Year falls on Jan. 29 and celebrations continue to Feb. 2. There are several events planned in and around the city.
In downtown Toronto’s Chinatown, there are celebrations planned on the weekend of Feb. 1 and 2 at Dragon City Mall, 280 Spadina Ave. and Chinatown Centre, 222 Spadina Ave., according to the Toronto Chinatown BIA.
Also downtown, the Eaton Centre hosts cultural performances, including Chinese dances, traditional eye dotting ceremonies, and dragon and lion parades.
The shopping centre will be decorated with new floor decals featuring this year’s Chinese zodiac sign. Immersive décor inspired by Singapore Marina Bay’s giant vertical gardens is planned.
Shoppers can try an oversized game of “Snakes and Ladders” as part of the celebration’s virtually enhanced interactive décor.
Cadillac Fairview’s Markville and Fairview malls will also host celebrations.
“Each year, Cadillac Fairview takes pride in celebrating and honouring the rich culture behind the festival with authentic and interactive programming in collaboration with our communities,” said Louise Della Fortuna, director, regional marketing, Cadillac Fairview.
There are a few other celebrations planned in the GTA.
The Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto plans a free community celebration on Jan. 26 from noon to 2 p.m. at 5183 Sheppard Avenue E. They also have a banquet planned on Feb. 1. For tickets, see their website here.
The Pacific Mall at 4300 Steeles Ave, E, Markham, welcomes the Year of the Snake with lion dances, cultural performances and giveaways.
The events are planned on Feb. 1, 2 and 8. For more information, see the website here.
