A pair of chefs who once ran a Michelin-recommended restaurant in Toronto are now shutting down their culinary business entirely.
Kate Chomyshyn and Julio Guajardo were behind Mexican restaurant Fonda Balam, and after it closed, a series of pop-ups and line up of products operating under the name Liebre.
Liebre popped up all around the city at places like Paradise Grapevine, True History Brewing, Hamers Coffee, Standard Time and The Company We Keep. They served items like guacamole, blistered shishitos, tostadas and tacos, many of which were prepared with their own products.
Now, they’ve announced they’re shutting down Liebre for good.

“Hello to our beautiful community! We’ve made the decision to close Liebre and K&J Cocina as we step out from the restaurant industry in order to find a little more balance in our lives and work on building new skills,” reads their announcement on social media.
“Liebre was born as a way for guests to bring home their favourite flavours from the restaurant and frankly without it, we feel a bit disconnected from our original message. We wanted to thank everyone who has supported us this summer as we bounced around trying to share our food through the pop-ups. We had some very generous hosts who always made us feel at home and appreciate everyone we collaborated with. It was a wild ride that felt worthwhile because of your kind words and support. We hope you enjoy some balance with your loved ones this holiday season and have a beautiful 2025!”
The announcement has hundreds of likes on the couple’s social media accounts. There are also many comments on the announcements wishing them well in their next chapter.
