A longlist of over 30 best new restaurants in the country was just put out by Air Canada to contend for their top 10 list.
There are some truly excellent Canadian restaurants on the list, and it’s no surprise that Toronto has a strong presence.
There are a total of six Toronto restaurants on Air Canada’s best new restaurants list. They are Bar Prima, Contrada, Conejo Negro, Martine’s Wine Bar, Mhel and Takja BBQ House.
Bar Prima is a speakeasy-like Parkdale restaurant serving glamorous Italian cuisine, Contrada is a tucked away gem in Little Italy and Conejo Negro blends Latin American, Creole and Caribbean flavours. Martine’s Wine Bar is a sophisticated new French-influenced restaurant, Mhel serves an ever changing Korean-Japanese menu and Korean BBQ is showcased elegantly at Takja.
There are other restaurants from Ontario on the list too: Fat Rabbit in St. Catharines and The Starlight in Stratford also made the cut. Fat Rabbit is part butchery and known for their mixed grill offerings, and The Starlight serves a menu of fun plates and is actually owned by people who used to run a bar in Toronto.
Montreal is also well represented on the longlist, with Casavant, Heni, Ile-de-France, Juliette Plaza, Parapluie and Sabayon all included. Bravo, Elio Volpe, Gary’s, Lila and Dovetail in Vancouver made the list as well.
The other restaurants on the list are Ada in Charlottetown, Bar Gigi in Calgary, Black Cat Pizzeria in St. John’s, Cafe Malabar in Victoria, Cameline in Gatineau, Crumb Queen/Andy’s Lunch in Winnipeg, F&B Restaurant in Saskatoon, Maison de Soma in Mont-Tremblant, La Roca in Bay Bulls, Tradish’s The Ancestor Cafe in Fort Langley and Bar Henry, Little Wolf and Bernadette’s in Edmonton.
“We’re thrilled to shine a light on Canada’s emerging culinary talent through Air Canada’s annual Best New Restaurants list,” said Andy Shibata, Vice President, Brand, Air Canada, in a press release.
“Food is an important part of culture and heritage, and by sharing the very best of Canada’s creative culinary scene, we hope to inspire people to seek out great food experiences across our country. In doing so, we are proud to celebrate the best of Canadian talent and support the vitality of Canada’s restaurant and hospitality sector.”
Air Canada’s top 10 ranking of the best new restaurants in Canada will be unveiled on Nov. 4.
