If tonight’s (December 31) New Year’s Eve celebrations are anything like Diwali, many Brampton residents will be grateful to have the next day off so they can sleep in.

New Year’s Eve is one of four days during the year when residents are permitted to set off fireworks without a permit.

Acceptable fireworks are limited to the short-range variety—they can’t travel higher than three metres (10 feet).

Additionally, fireworks are only permitted to be set off between dusk and 11 p.m.

However, during Diwali, which was on November 4 this year, many residents complained of fireworks being set off into the early hours of the morning.

As a result, this year could be the last year residents are permitted to have their own fireworks displays, as City Council is considering banning them outright.

Currently, Council is waiting on a report from Staff, which won’t be ready until the start of the new year—between January and February, so, while residents will still be permitted to have their own fireworks displays this year, it could be the last time.
