A Toronto restaurant that was granted a prestigious Michelin star has just announced they’re shutting down.

Frilu is known for its inventive tasting menus featuring everything from daily baked bread with handmade butter to veal, spot prawns and lobster tail, all immaculately sourced and imaginatively presented. The restaurant was also awarded a Michelin green star in 2023, a new award introduced in 2020 given “to restaurants that are role models when it comes to sustainable gastronomy.”

Now, the restaurant has just made a post to their social media beginning “On to new things…” signed by John-Vincent and Sandra Troiano. The post garnered hundreds of likes and around a hundred comments within 24 hours, with several comments from other high profile area restaurants wishing them the best.

“After a long time to reflect, we have decided to close FRILU. We are finishing the same way we started, with smiles on our faces. It has been a wild and rewarding ride for the past 6 years,” reads the post.

“FRILU has been a motivating force for our goals and desires and has propelled and inspired us towards a sustainable future in different ventures. Starting next week, our menu will be the best of both spring and summer dishes. This menu will be served until our last day of service.”

They say they have “other plans and projects on the horizon” and are shifting their focus to their 15-acre Willowolf Farm in Tottenham. They majorly credited the farm, which they started up almost four years ago, with their green star achievement as it’s the source of much of their seasonal produce.

“To Our Beloved Guests, it is important for us to let you know that we appreciate the amount of support and kindness you all have shown us, making this chapter a pleasure on all fronts,” continues the post. “We will never forget the friendly faces and kind words who have joined us for an evening at our restaurant.”

Frilu’s last day of service will be July 31.
