A shop for package-free groceries and goods in Toronto has announced they’re permanently closing down their physical store.
bare market posted an emotional video to social media this week saying they’d soon be opening their doors “for the final time.”
“We’re overcome with a mix of emotions,” reads the caption of the post. “It’s a moment of reflection and excitement as we transition to a new phase while saying goodbye to our physical space.”
The video begins, “Let me tell you the store of how bare market unfolded in sixes.” It details the story of how bare market founder Dayna Stein left her consulting role to create bare market, hustled to build the brand and do pop-ups, secured a physical space and then almost immediately had it temporarily close due to COVID, and kept fighting to stay alive through struggles like inflation until six months ago, she decided not to renew the lease.
The concept won’t disappear completely, as they’re shifting online and working on a potential BYOC drop-off model, but you’ll no longer be able to fill up on their beloved bulk products and perishable items. The social media post continues on to say that anyone interested in any fixtures or equipment from the store should reach out.
“Your support means the world to us, and we’re grateful for every moment we’ve shared with you,” reads the post. “Thank you for being the heartbeat of our low-waste community.”
Other similar eco-minded businesses in the community commented on the post, saying things like, “bare was a beacon in the zero waste community and will always be remembered as such,” “I’m going to need to stock up,” “Yes to transformation” and “We are touched by your efforts in making this world a better place and making it easier for everyone to reduce waste.” One similar business even said they were contemplating doing the same thing, but decided to give it one more year.
bare market’s last day will be May 19.
