Having won a People’s Choice Award himself, Hollywood star and Mississauga native Simu Liu will be front-and-centre this Sunday night as the latest awards are handed out to the best the entertainment industry has to offer in movies and television.
Never too far from the spotlight, the 34-year-old Liu will host the 2024 People’s Choice Awards taking place Feb. 18 in Santa Monica, California. Liu shot to stardom with Marvel’s 2021 mega-hit Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and last year starred in the summer blockbuster Barbie movie.
He won a People’s Choice Award in the “Action Movie Star” category two years ago for his leading role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. And Liu is up for another award this year, nominated for his role as one of the Kens in the Barbie movie, which itself is up for “Movie of the Year” and “Comedy Movie of the Year.”
Speaking this week to E! News in the U.S., Liu said there could be a few pleasant surprises lined up for Sunday night’s awards show.
With singing megastar Taylor Swift touring in Europe, it’s unlikely she’ll make a surprise appearance, Liu noted.
But what about some of the other huge stars from Barbie? Fellow Canadian Ryan Gosling? Barbie herself, Margot Robbie?
“I would wager that we’ll see a couple of people from the movie,” Liu told E! News, adding, “I want to leave a little bit to surprise as well…when people tune in on Sunday.”
The People’s Choice Awards honour crowd favourites across the entertainment realm, including big screen movies and TV shows and the people who star in and create them. The general public determines the winners via online vote.
The two-hour People’s Choice Awards will air on NBC in prime time this Sunday.
People’s Choice Awards organizers told media in the U.S. earlier they see the Mississauga native as a “fan favourite” and “tour de force” in Hollywood, noting his “limitless charm and connection to fans perfectly embody the spirit of this awards show.”
