A plant-based sandwich concept is moving into a home of its own after previously operating out of another restaurant.

Stefano’s Sandwiches is a project from the people behind Gia, a plant-based Italian restaurant. Stefano’s first launched in 2021, and serves plant-based sandwiches like smash burgers, meatball subs, eggplant parmigiana and a “filet-o-tofu.”

They’re going to be replacing another spot for smash burgers with their own plant-based version by moving into the space left vacant by Extra Burger.

Stefano’s will be open for lunch, brunch, dinner and late night service, and will be offering takeout. So if you’ve been missing your smash burger fix at the Extra Burger address and you’re willing to go plant-based, you’ll still be able to a grab a burger and crinkle cut fries from the same spot.

And if you’re already plant-based, you’re in luck: the whole restaurant will be totally plant-based with vegan wine, local beer and mocktails.

In addition to their smash burger, filet-o-tofu and eggplant parmigiana, they’ll also have an Italian sausage sandwich and corned beef sandwich. They’ll also be offering dishes like Gia meatballs, arancini, olives and artichokes, and sides like crinkle cut fries, mac n’ “cheez,” baby gem salad, almond “mylkshakes” and fresh juices.

“We are renovating the space to add seating, sort of a sexy diner vibe,” Gia/Stefano’s owner Jenny Coburn tells YourCityWithIN. “We love the bar and brightness of the space.”

The new Stefano’s space at 1265 Dundas St. W. should be opening in about six to eight weeks.
