It’s challenging for a city like Mississauga–one that sits next to Canada’s biggest and best-known metropolitan municipality–to emphasize not just its local art, but its specific impact on the artists that call the city home.

Fortunately for local artists and the city that loves them, a new opportunity has been presented to Mississauga filmmakers.

The City of Mississauga recently announced that it has launched the Our Future City – Short Film Competition as part of its initial conversation with the community on the city’s Official Plan Review

The official plan guides future growth in the city and contains policies on the social, economic, cultural, natural and built environments. The review will consider the changing needs, opportunities and aspirations of the community.

What does that mean for filmmakers?

If you live, work, play or learn in Mississauga, you’re invited to submit a short film (five minutes or less) that envisions the future of the city, focusing on everyday experiences, local matters or urban aspirations.

Winning films will be screened at a city-led film event organized with Hot Docs on Nov. 2, 2019, at the Noel Ryan Auditorium (Central Library) in Mississauga.

Winners will have an opportunity to meet special guests, network with industry professionals and receive a variety of prizes including Hot Docs festival passes and vouchers for filmmaking workshops provided by Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) and Charles Street Video.

The competition is open to anyone 14 years or older.

Films can be submitted from now until Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019.

Filmmakers can submit their films online at mississauga.ca/film-competition
