A chain of South Korean restaurants that’s nearly 25 years old and has thousands of locations just opened their first ever North American location in Toronto.

Bonjuk originated in Daehangno, South Korea and serves healthy Korean food, specializing in Korean porridge called juk.

Varieties of porridge on their menu include abalone, red crab meat, chicken, bulgogi octopus, spicy seafood, shrimp and seven vegetable.

They even make sweet porridges with red bean and pumpkin options, and baby varieties where the seasoning and portion sizes are tailored especially for little ones. Aside from porridge, they also serve a selection of different kinds of bibimbap.

The Bonjuk space in Toronto is stylish and minimalist, but the location is mainly oriented towards takeout with only nine seats.

“What started as a modest venture quickly blossomed into a beloved brand known for its dedication to providing healthy, nutritious meals. Within just six years, Bonjuk became the first Korean franchise to surpass 1,000 locations, revolutionizing the traditional Korean porridge market,” reads the Bonjuk website.

“Today, with over 2,000 locations globally, Bonjuk proudly opens its doors to North America, beginning in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.”

The first Canadian location of Bonjuk is now open at 4841 Yonge St.
