The epilogue now begins at Prologue Cafe, a well-loved spot in Toronto’s Upper Beaches neighbourhood that is just as known for its trivia nights, board game gatherings, book club meetings and live music showcases as it is for its coffee.

The literary-themed cafe (located at 2249 Gerrard St. E.), whose website starts with “this is where our story begins,” recently took to Facebook to announce that now, the story (of the cafe itself, at least) is ending.

“With a mixture of gratitude and a heavy heart, we write to bid farewell as we close the doors of our cafe. It is with immense appreciation that we reflect on the beautiful moments, shared laughter, and warm connections that have graced our establishment,” the owners wrote in a post.

In the post, the operators say the cafe was created to share “exceptional coffee” and a welcoming haven with the community. However, they decided to close the space after finding themselves “at a crossroads.”

“Despite the challenges, we are grateful for the memories we’ve created together,” the post continues.

“As we say goodbye, please know that your support has meant the world to us. The friendships formed and the sense of community you brought will forever hold a special place in our hearts. While our physical doors may close, the spirit of our cafe lives on in the shared moments and connections we’ve built.”

The news shocked local patrons, some of whom said Prologue Cafe played a big part in their stories.

“Three years ago (almost to the day), I came to Prologue on a second date with the man who I just married a couple of weeks ago. Thank you for being part of our love story and a regular stop on so many coffee walks since! All the best,” one person wrote.

Others called the closure heartbreaking and vowed to come by before the cafe closes in mid-June. Others shared memories of their visits.

“We are so sad you are closing your doors, our family [has] enjoyed visiting your warm and inviting café. From our family to yours we wish you wonderful new endeavours and success,” another poster wrote.

In the post, operators said the cafe’s final day of operations will be June 15. Prior to that, Prologue will host a Catan Night on May 18 and a board game night on June 7.

“We encourage you to continue supporting local businesses, fostering community bonds, and spreading the warmth that makes neighbourhoods thrive,” the post reads.

“Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for being a part of our cafe family. We’ll carry the memories with us, and we hope our paths cross again in the future.”
