Mississauga officials are looking for a few good ideas as they prepare to seal a collection of items inside a time capsule to be opened in the city 25 years from now.

The time capsule idea is part of the City of Mississauga’s celebration of the city’s 50th anniversary in 2024. And officials are asking Mississauga residents for their take on what should be included inside the sealed chamber.

In a post to social media, the city invited residents to be a part of history.

“To commemorate our 50th anniversary, we will be creating a time capsule that will be opened in 2049, Mississauga’s 75th anniversary,” the post reads. “We want to hear your suggestions of what to include, such as objects that represent present-day Mississauga or greetings for the future.”

In an online description of the time capsule project, officials noted the plan is for it to “showcase what life is like in Mississauga today and include items that represent the spirit of the city and its diverse communities.”

Mississauga turned 50 on Jan. 1 of this year. On Jan. 1, 1974, the townships of Streetsville, Port Credit and Mississauga amalgamated to form Mississauga.

Throughout 2024, city officials, community organizations and others will be hosting numerous events to mark Mississauga’s golden anniversary.
Anniversary celebrations were kicked off on New Year’s Eve in Mississauga’s downtown core as part of the city’s annual new year’s festivities at Celebration Square.

Former mayor Bonnie Crombie, who left town to head up the Ontario Liberals on Jan. 12, said earlier that Mississauga’s 50th birthday celebration in 2024 will be a “party for the ages.”

She noted at the time that new public art, city-wide street banners, a commemorative Mississauga Library card and a wide array of anniversary-themed programming and events are just a few things planned for the year-long 50th anniversary bash.

In all, more than 50 initiatives throughout the entirety of 2024 are in place to mark the milestone, city officials said earlier.

One such initiative was a contest that challenged local musicians to create a new Mississauga “anthem.”

The winner, Mikey Bloom, and his winning entry were officially introduced at a press conference held Tuesday morning at Metalworks Studios in Mississauga.
