Tony winning musical, first produced in Oakville, returns to stage

Canada’s most successful musical ever on Broadway, first produced in Oakville, is returning to the stage.

Broadway in Portland has announced the return of the national tour of Come From Away, a Broadway musical about the true story of the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed the world on September 11, 2001.

The show will play at Keller Auditorium from May 2 to 7.

Written by Canadian husband-and-wife David Hein and Irene Sankoff, the popular show was based on the real-life stories of people in Gander, N.L., who provided shelter, food and support to the thousands of stranded passengers after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Producers for the award-winning Come From Away, who first workshopped through the theatre program at Sheridan College, ended the Broadway run at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on Oct. 2, 2022.

When the curtains closed, the show was the 49th longest-running show in Broadway history, as well as the longest-running production in the theatre’s 105-year history.

Come From Away features a book, music and lyrics by Olivier, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award winners and Grammy and two-time Tony Award nominees Hein and Sankoff, direction by Tony Award winner and Outer Critics Circle Award winner Christopher Ashley, musical staging by Olivier Award winner and two-time Tony Award nominee Kelly Devine, and music supervision by Olivier Award winner and Grammy Award nominee Ian Eisendrath.

The hit musical has won the Tony Award for “Best Direction of a Musical by Ashley and four Olivier Awards in London, including “Best New Muscial.”
