Doughnuts in Toronto come in many sizes from the tiniest mini doughnuts to the biggest, fluffiest ones, and though they’re mostly round there are also bars and fritters.

There are even more variations when it comes to flavours, glazes, drizzles, fillings and toppings. When it comes to these kinds of combinations, the only limits are the doughnut maker’s imagination. However, great doughnuts all have few things in common: they’re perfectly sweet, and have a crispy golden fried exterior with a light and pillowy interior.

Here are the top doughnuts in Toronto.

5 – Better Days

The look of this place and its menu both match the name, bringing a taste of retro doughnut and coffee shop culture to the sleepy intersection of Dovercourt and Hallam.

They specialize in classic doughnut varieties like cherry sticks, French crullers and Boston Cream. Old school options like maple dip, chocolate dip, sprinkles, marble and double chocolate feel like iconic Coffee Time doughnuts, but better.

The star of their menu is the apple fritter, which is huge, chunky, crunchy and golden brown, with a thick sugary glaze on top.

4 – Sugar Daddy

Blink and you’ll miss this hole-in-the-wall mini doughnut operation marked only by a glowing red neon sign. With barely enough room to stand just inside the door, this is a takeout-only operation, but you can watch all your hot and fluffy mini doughnuts being fried to order right before your eyes. While the space may be small, the portion sizes and flavours at this spot are huge. Their claim to fame is selling mini doughnuts by the bucket.

The doughnuts come in plain, cinnamon sugar or glazed varieties, but the real fun comes in with the option to choose your own “dunks” and “squeezies.” Inventive flavours include funfetti, lemon, salted caramel and maple butter, but two of their most popular are Nutella creme and vanilla.

Opt for Sugar Daddy’s cheekily named “Three Way” to try all three kinds of doughnuts and two dunks. The bite-sized doughnuts are too easy to keep addictively popping in your mouth, and the “dunks” are smooth and sweet, evoking nostalgic Dunkaroos.

3 – Cops

You have to know where to look to find the location of this doughnut shop just off King West, though they do have other less secretive spots.

Visiting the original location in an alleyway is kind of like finding a tiny unique art gallery: the little building is entirely decked out in pink, and bold mirrored lettering decorates the minimal space inside. They even have the slogan “art worth eating.”

Mini doughnuts are made fresh to order, resulting in airy little rings that melt in your mouth. They always serve doughnuts with their own signature baby pink glaze with sour cream and sweetened milk, and with cinnamon sugar with a crack of salt. A third rotating doughnut flavour drops weekly. For example, a coconut cream flavour is topped with a rich glaze and crispy bits of toasted coconut.

2 – Bloomer’s

If you’re vegan and love doughnuts, head to a location of this bakery. They’re known for all sorts of sweet treats, but doughnuts in tricked out flavours are their specialty.

While these doughnuts may be vegan, you’d never feel like you’re missing out on anything. They’re huge in size and very puffy, and there’s a dizzying array of punchy flavours to choose from at any given time, from rose pistachio and salted caramel pecan to tiramisu and strawberry shortcake.

A birthday cake doughnut is topped with the classic glaze and sprinkles, as well as chewy little cake pieces. It’s like two great desserts in one.

1 – Dipped

This shop started out as a window in Kensington Market, but they’ve since expanded to a much larger space with lots of seating in Parkdale.

They make yeast doughnuts that have an extensive 20 minute proofing time, resulting in a super spongy and light doughnut. Dipped makes all sorts of inventive gourmet flavours like banana cream pie, rosewater pistachio, blueberry lemon shortbread and their signature, brown butter sea salt.

A matcha strawberry cruller has an airy honeycomb structure inside and is coated in a grassy matcha glaze and topped with a frill of fresh and light strawberry white chocolate ganache.
