Broth, noodles, herbs, sprouts, and a variety of different meats. So simple but so amazingly delicious! Pho is a Vietnamese street food that has taken the world by storm. A healthy and relatively cheap option, there are a wide assortment of phos out there, and even some Thai restaurants have created their own take on this Vietnamese classic. As Oakville continues to grow, so does its pho scene. There are quite a few options in the town now and here are some of the best:
There was quite a selection of phos available here, but the one that stuck out to me was their ox tail pho! It was as delicious as it sounds. I don’t think I have ever come across an oxtail pho in the past, but it’s a neat little option offered by the resto that the explorer in you may want to try. Do keep in mind that oxtail is a different texture than beef or pork so the meat will be a little gamier, but the flavours within the broth compliment it to a tee.
Just because you’re good at one thing, doesn’t mean that you can’t be good at other things too. This resto is proof of just that. While the broth here was lighter, the ingredients were more pronounced. Green and yellow onions with delicious noodles were accompanied by squid, shrimp, and muscles. Are you a seafood lover looking for a different style of pho? Then this may be an interesting option for you in the city.
Ever finish your pho and want a little more? It’s a little awkward because then you feel like ordering another one, but then you may just worry that you’re being judged. First off, life is short, eat well. Second, instead of getting a regular sized pho, why not an XL sized one? Their beef rice noodle pho comes in 3 sizes with a choice of 3 different meats. These meat options include rare beef, brisket, stewed tripe, beef tendon, beef balls, and chicken! Now that’s quite a list, but just look at the size of that bowl – all for less than $15.
While the original pho here is quite textbook, it’s the satay pho that really grabbed me by the taste buds! Having the option to choose from either is always nice, but if you’re feeling a little adventurous, the satay option is more than worth a try. A milky coconut flavour sets in with every spoonful and o my is it delightful! If the aroma doesn’t get you, the flavour will. Get it to go and enjoy it at home.
There may be quite a few locations across the GTA, but don’t let that fool you, each location has some specialty items that the others don’t. While this may be tricky when going from location to location, it does help make each location a little bit unique – and unique is refreshing. The satay got me again here, but it was done very differently than any other satay pho I’ve had. This was one of the most flavourful phos I’ve ever come across and if I’m ever in the area, it’ll be a no-brainer for me to go back and have another. Pineapples in the dish help to offset the nodes of spice, but the heat here is not overwhelming at all. It’s a flavourful heat that blends with the soup perfectly. When you bite into a spring onion, the flavour profile changes yet again. Oakville, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
