A good piece of pie is the perfect end to a holiday meal or time spent hanging out at a local diner or cafe. From fruit pies to cream pies, there are lots of sweet slices to choose from in Toronto.
Great pies have a delicious filling and a perfectly complementary crust. Some of them look fancy with lots of decoration, drizzle, and lattice work on top, and some look plainer, but all of them feel like a hug on a plate.
Here are a few of Toronto’s top spots to grab some pie.
Skyline may technically be a diner and not a bakery, but they’re not-so-secretly one of the best places in Toronto to get a full pie or have a slice.
They specialize in cream pies that may look relatively humble, but when topped with a mountain of whipped cream, they’re nothing short of perfection. With flavours like peanut butter, coconut, pina colada, lime and cardamom rose, you can’t go wrong. They even make “pie-cicles.”
This Annex bakery is Toronto’s decades-old source for allergen-friendly pies and other baked goods. They make pumpkin, cherry, blueberry and pecan varieties with spelt, unsweetened, rice, diabetic, vegan and other options, and they have mini and large sizes.
Their spelt apple pie contains no dairy, eggs or sugar and is all natural with no preservatives, and is made with raisins, apple juice, clover honey and ginger. The naturally sweet flavour profile really comes through, and the spelt crust is nice and flavourful.
3 – Sweetie Pie
This pie shop has as many locations as they do varieties of pie. It’s easy to see why: they have a great selection and every option is well executed.
Their cherry pie has a nice gelid filling and a sturdy, buttery crust. Other varieties on offer include pecan, chocolate bourbon pecan, blueberry, pumpkin, apple and strawberry rhubarb.
2 – Mabel’s Bakery
Multiple locations of this bakery sell pies with a thick, buttery crust and the most delicious fillings like blueberry, pecan, pumpkin and sour cherry. They’ve been in business since 2008 and use local organic ingredients as often as possible.
Their apple pie is especially tasty, with nice big chunks of juicy, warmly spiced apples encased in a thick, crunchy, golden crust.
This cute Kensington cafe is Toronto’s go-to place for pies of all stripes. The case is always stocked with multiple varieties like banana cream, chocolate pecan and lemon meringue. They make over half a dozen varieties of apple pie alone.
However, the flavour they’re probably most famous for is their sour cherry. The natural tart flavour of the cherries is the highlight of this pie, and it’s nicely complemented by a crumbly crust and classic lattice work on top.
