“Tough times” prompts sale of popular Toronto brewery

Another Toronto business that made it through the ultra-tough and tight pandemic years says that with the future looking less bright, a difficult decision must be made.
Recently, the operators of The Aviary Brewpub, a popular restaurant, bar and bottleshop that opened six years ago in the city’s Canary District (not far from the Distillery District), announced that they’re selling the business.
“We had so many exciting plans for 2024 and beyond. We’ve tried our hardest to stick through first the pandemic years, and now this recessionary year,” operators wrote on social media.
“We care so much about the community that we’ve called home for the last six years. Many of you we know as close friends. Times are tough, and sadly, it’s getting harder.”
In the post, the owners say that while the brewpub and Longslice beer retail shop remain open and home deliveries remain available, they will be selling the “cherished” bar and brewery.
The reaction to the post was swift, with patrons sharing their disappointment and condolences. Many thanked the owners for being a safe space for queer Torontonians.
“Saddened to hear this news Aviary/Longslice,” one person wrote on Instagram.
“Thank you for holding space for the Queer East Run Crew family and many others. Your establishment, love and service will not be forgotten in Toronto.”
Others shared fond memories.
“Oh my gosh. We lived on King during the pandemic and this was a lifesaver for us. The crew. The staff. The trivia. Online trivia. Back to in-person trivia,” another poster wrote.
“Thank you so much for the puns and [gose] and the best chicken burger around.”
The brewpub, operated by Longslice and The Dock Ellis, opened in 2018 and quickly became known for its “famous fried chicken” and classic chicken sandwich. Other menu items include chicken wings, chicken tenders (in keeping with the overall bird theme), smash burgers, veggie burgers, poutine, nachos and more.
The resto also boasts a kids menu and a brunch menu that features a smoked trout Benny and a breakfast poutine made with tater tots, cheese curds, poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and a choice of peameal bacon, traditional breakfast bacon or sausage.
In the post, operators asked interested buyers–or those who might know one–to get in touch.
“If you, or someone you know have any interest in buying a brewery and brewpub, please drop us an email,” they wrote.
“Come support us and buy Loose Lips, Canary Lager and Princess Clementine.”
