There will be one fewer Walmart location in Oshawa by the end of spring.

The supercentre at 1300 King St. E. in east Oshawa will close at the end of May, according to published reports. The retail giant’s lease at that location is set to expire, and Walmart has apparently opted to focus on improving three other brick-and-mortar locations in Durham Region that will receive renovations over the coming months.

There were indications that the workers at the store, which has served Oshawa and nearby Courtice for close to a decade, will be offered positions at other nearby locations. Oshawa Supercentre on Laval Drive, the Oshawa North Supercentre on Harmony Road North and the Whitby Supercentre on Baldwin St. S. are also in line to be renovated and expanded over the coming months.

The retailer also has locations in Ajax, Bowmanville and Port Perry.

The location that is closing was previously a Zellers. In 2011, Walmart acquired the leases for over three dozen Zellers locations, including 19 in Ontario, and converted them to fit with the American chain’s branding.

The news of the closure was reported earlier on Tuesday (March 1) by durhamregion.com.
