This month, Hamilton is hosting a free month-long concert series, and the venues aren’t your typical bars.

Jazz musicians might be more accustomed to playing in dive bars or bistros, but this April, they’ll be playing at Hamilton’s libraries. Seventeen concerts by Hamilton musicians will be happening in honour of National Jazz Appreciation Month, and they’ll all be totally free.

Put on by the Hamilton Musicians’ Guild, the concerts will take place at library branches across town, with most of them hosted at Central Library. They’ll mostly be happening in the afternoon, with a couple of concerts in the morning and evening.

Local acts participating in the series include The Hive, Guitar of Fire, Jay Burr Project, Darcy Hepner Quartet, Michael Maguire and Henry Strong Trio. A 15-piece big band will even be playing Valley Park Branch on April 15.

The concert series runs from April 2 to April 29. You can find the full lineup of acts on the Hamilton Public Library and the Hamilton Musicians’ Guild websites.

One thing’s for sure: librarians won’t be shushing these musicians as they make these normally quiet spaces quite a bit louder.
